Blessed Beltane!
This Beltane I'm thinking a lot about fertility. What makes a fertile soil for community to grow? What makes fertile soil for justice, empathy, compassion and kindness to flourish? What makes a fertile soil for the new loving and just world beyond capitalism to sprout and thrive?
Right now, there are so many of us who want to grow this loving and just world but we are planting seeds into soil that has so little nutrients. We are hoping our seeds will thrive in dust. And some of them do -- some hardy little seeds, tended carefully and constantly by loving hands are thriving.
But we need healthier soils because our seeds need to grow quickly and easily so that as many people as possible can survive this nightmare we’re living. Right now, the individualism, oppressions, polarization and divide and conquer of capitalism have depleted our soils and given us so little to work with. We are plagued with cycles of violence, trauma reactions, individualism and scarcity mentality. How can seeds of loving revolution thrive in these conditions.
This is why we must focus on the soil -- the foundations of our lives -- relationship. Building fertile ground for new and loving and just ideas and practices to easily spread and grow.
To me that looks like: supporting each other in transforming trauma, approaching each other with kindness, empathy and curiosity, assuming best intentions from people, offering to help each other learn and grow instead of expecting perfection, showing up to conflict instead of discarding each other when things get complex, being radically generous with our time, care, love, and resources with one another, learning how to need and be needed, and building a practice of abolitionist ideals.
This will build a fertile ground to plant seeds of revolution -- where people feel accepted instead of judged. Where people feel creative and experimental instead of afraid to get things wrong. Where we are undoing the violence of this brutal system without recreating the conditions for more violence to happen. Where we are deepening our bonds with one another, resourcing each other so we can show up more and more for the immense struggles we all face.
In this fertile soil we can build stronger communities, stronger movements across a wider range of issues, healthier families, better relationships.
Beltane is also about relationships -- the weaving together of one another through sacred ritual -- the May pole, the stag hunt and following ceremony, communal fires. This is because our ancestors have always known that relationship is the foundation of life. We cannot build anything without strong relationship.
This Beltane may we connect to the power of relationship to build fertile soil for the loving and just world beyond capitalism. May we build fertile soil for the revolution through these relationships and allow the loving and just world we are building beyond capitalism to flourish and thrive.
May your relationships be well tended. May you navigate conflict well. May you practice radical generosity and receive it when it comes your way. May you be well supported in transforming your traumas. May you accept the wonderful, messy and imperfect reality of your being and all those around you. May you learn and grow and help others to do the same.
And may you be filled with the MOST wonderful pleasure, now and always.
So may it be!
